Whitby 2006

Beautiful Place, Beautiful People

As Usual things didn't go quite to plan and we set off an hour late, but we were soon travelling up, down and over the beautiful North Yorkshire Moorlands and down into Whitby. We had booked the same B&B that we used when we were there last March as it was just across the road from the Whitby Pavilion, where the 2 night dos as well as the custom show were being held. We had soon booked in and awaited the arrival of Jamie, Phillapa, Joey & Heather, who soon arrived so we made our way down to the harbour and onto The Angel where we sat ourselves outside and partook in a beer or four. We spent the rest of the afternoon saying our hellos to those that also found their way to The Angel. Before long we got peckish and went over the bridge to The Dolphin to meet up with Rick and Alison (Modrapheniacs) and to tuck into The Dolphins delightful cod & chips, before retreating back to our B&B to get changed for the night time.

I was working on both nights so left everyone at the B&B to get to The Pavilion on time and continued with my hellos to those that ventured out early. The Pavilion was extremely slow in filling up, possibly because it was such a beautiful evening that everyone had either stopped on the campsite or where still down in the harbour. The band that night didn't exactly entice people in either. Jarvis Humby went on stage just after 11pm and all of about 6 people were dancing to them. I'm sure someone somewhere loves these guys but to me they were awful. They tried their best but it just wasn't to my taste. By around midnight The Pavilion was quite busy and i spent the rest of the night chatting to anyone who would listen to me, including a few of the Blues SC as i told them why i had withdrawn my application to join the club.

After a hearty breakfast we sat outside our B&B chatting to folks as they made their way to the custom show before strolling over there ourselves. There were some decent entries in the show but the numbers where not as high as had been hoped for. In fact there was probably just as many nice scooters up in the car park as not everyone wants to display their scooters in custom shows. The Brinks Matt Robbery Lambretta, for me, was the best in show but we didn't hang about to hear the results, preferring instead to go down to the harbour for some liquid refreshment. Whitby was packed with tourists as well as us scooterists. Also in town were hordes of bikers who had rode over from their do in Pickering, 10 miles down the road. 20 years ago there would have been carnage but as we are all to old for that now we settled for having a beer and a few laughs with them instead. Dawn soon got the munchies for a steak dinner so we found a place serving steak so she could quench her craving. Now, the walk down to the harbour is no problem but the walk back is a killer. Whitby is a beautiful place but i do wish they would get rid of them cliffs, or put an escalator in them. I'd rather go for a 5 mile run then keep climbing them cliffs. To make it worse no one was prepared to carry me up the cliff, some friends i've got. I needed a lie down after exhausting myself getting back up to the B&B so went and had 40 winks.

When myself and Phillapa reported to the Pavilion ready for the night do we were surprised to find a small queue already forming outside. I had a feeling it was going to fill up quicker than it had the previous night. Dawn had gone into town with Jamie, Joey and Heather rather than come straight into the do. Town apparently was very busy and had quite a few Hen Parties touring the pubs. I bet these kept quite a few scooterboys happy for a while. The Pavilion though was filling up nicely. Tonights band were The Complete Stone Roses, who took to the stage to a packed dance floor. I had been really looking forward to seeing these lads and i wasn't disappointed. They were awesome. I know they're not to everyone's taste but in my humble opinion they are the best band we have had at a rally for quite some time (with the exception of Bad Manners and Basketcase). They played for about 90 minutes belting out all the classics as i and my fellow vfm stage hands struggled to keep some of them back or of the stage. The rest of the night was played out by the usual VFM DJ's, Tim, Daz, Evo, Dave Porter and Steve Foster.

Again after breakfast on Sunday we chilled outside our digs saying our goodbyes before reluctantly packing up and setting of home ourselves. Whitby to me had been the best rally so far this year and i really hope we return next year as its such a beautiful place. Its just them damn Cliffs.
